The victims, Tochukwu Eneh and Chukwuemeka Ugwu, who are in JSS3 and another whose name could not be immediately ascertained, were last seen on Thursday May 12. Tochukwu is from Obioma while Chukwuemeka hails from Nsude, both in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. The boys were reportedly abducted near the school on that fateful Thursday.
According to family sources, the students, who just finished their final examinations same day, were in a happy mood because they were to go home the next day. But that evening, a group of schoolboys, including Tochukwu and Chukwuemeka, were returning to school from the barber’s shop when they were accosted by some suspected kidnappers who ordered them to stop. Alarmed, the schoolboys scampered away in different directions.
But in the ensuing melee, the kidnappers grabbed Tochukwu and Chukwuemeka. It was gathered that all the other students, except three, made it safely back to school. However, the frightened boys did not raise the alarm because of the consequences of breaching school regulations.
So, the incident did not become known to the authorities until the following day when Tochukwu’s guardian did not see him at home. The said guardian, a female worker in the college, had some items which she wanted Tochukwu to take to his mother in Enugu.
When she learnt what had happened, she then notified the school authorities and the parents of the victims. When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP George Okafor, said he was not aware of the incident at the time of filling this report. Okafor said he was just coming into the state from Abuja on an assignment.
