A soldier at a checkpoint at Panshanu village in Toro Local
Government Area of Bauchi State has reportedly shot dead a policeman,
Bwala Mohamned, attached to Taraba State Police Command.
The
trigger-happy soldier also wounded three other policemen in the Saturday
incident.
The policemen were on their way to Police College, Kaduna for a
promotion course when the soldiers stopped them at the checkpoint. It
was learnt the policemen were cleared and allowed to pass but one of the
soldiers manning the checkpoint opened fire at the bus conveying them.
Mohammed died instantly while three others sustained gunshot wounds.
The yet-to-be-identified soldier abandoned his AK47 rifle with 31 rounds
of live ammunition and escaped into the bush.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Haruna
Mohammed, confirmed the report in a statement. He said: “On May 28
(Saturday) about 2:45pm, a Toyota ‘Hummer’ bus with registration number
XG 398 GW conveying 18 police officers from Taraba State Command to
Police College, Kaduna for a promotion course was stopped at a military
checkpoint at Panshanu village of Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi
State.
“The vehicle was searched and allowed to proceed but all of a sudden,
one unidentified soldier attached to 33 Artillery Brigade, Bauchi,
opened fire and shot at the bus from the rear glass and escaped.
