Anti-grazing law: Beef up security in Taraba, security experts urged

As the anti-grazing law of Taraba State begins this week, two security experts have enjoined the President Muhammad Buhari, to as a matter of great urgency, beef up security in the state.

The experts, Mr. Lawrence Olowu, a retired Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and Mr Afeez Otaru, are of the opinion that the recent mayhem in Benue State, where 73
persons were killed by herdsmen, would be a child's play if Buhari and relevant security agencies did not stand up to the security challenge that could mar the state if that law was implemented.

According to Olowu, there are bounds to be a breakdown of laws and order because Fulani is one out of the three major tribes in Taraba State. He said the other two major tribes are the Tiv and Jukum.

Olowu said: “The Fulani in Taraba State are indigenes of the state unlike in Benue State, where Fulani goes to the state for open grazing.”
Olowu, why calling on President Buhari to beef up security in Taraba, said that currently, there is acute shortage of manpower amongst security agencies such as the military, police and DSS in the state.

Also speaking in the same vein, Otaru accused Nigerian leaders of hypocrisy when it comes to security matters. He noted that if Nigerian leaders were the listening type, Boko Haram and other ethic militias activities would have been nipped in the bud before they escalated their activities to what they are today.

He further noted: “We’re sounding a warning now. It may fall on deaf ears, but when it happens, then scapegoats, such service chiefs will be sacrificed after loss lives of innocent souls. God forbid."
It will be recalled that the implementation of anti-grazing law of neighbouring Taraba State, Benue, led to the death of 73 persons, displacing at least 3000 persons with colossal destruction of property and valuables worth billions of naira by herdsmen.
