Couple hid pregnant ladies, say neighbours

Neighbours of the couple arrested over baby factory at Igando area of Lagos State yesterday said the suspects, Mr. Adeola Adebayo and his wife, Binta, usually hide pregnant ladies in their flat at the Treasure Palace Close Estate. One of the neighbours, who gave his name as Dayo, said that they were not surprised by the couple’s arrest because their activities in the estate had been suspicious. According to him, ladies, who are six to nine months pregnant, were always in their flat. Dayo noted that the couple just parked into the building last December.

He said the husband was not always seen at the flat unlike his wife. A community leader, who gave his name as Yokoyo, said the residents of the estate would not welcome the couple back to the house because they had brought bad name to the place. He said: “We are peaceful and lawabiding citizens. We have been living in the estate for many years and there has never been any issue of crime in this area, except the incident of the couple who we learnt were operating a baby factory.”
Yokoyo added he learnt the couple were keeping young expectant mothers in their flat when they were about to give birth. It was learnt that officials of Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development rescued a 15-year-old boy and two toddlers from the couple’s home on Tuesday.

It was also learnt that the couple operated an orphanage at 3, Alhaji Jimoh Sodiq Street, Igando, which has also been sealed. A petty trader on the street said the suspects had been operating the orphanage for many years.
She added that she used to see heavily pregnant women, who disappeared after they had been delivered of their babies. The trader said that the expectant mothers patronised her shop, adding that the Matron, popularly called Iya Dupe, had worked in the orphanage since 2016.
She said: “I never knew it was a baby factory or an illegal orphanage. You can see how quiet this street is and most of the bungalows have very high fences. So, it is almost impossible for anyone to know what happens behind those fences. But I know that I usually see heavily pregnant women come from the orphanage to buy pepper and tomato from me. After sometime, I won’t see the young women again and later on, I will see new ones.”
