Student killed as religious crisis hits MUATECH

Authorities of the Modibbo Adama University of Technology (MAUTECH), Yola, Adamawa State yesterday shut down the institution indefinitely following fracas leading to the death of a student while many others were injured.
The Registrar, Alhaji Ibrahim Ribadu, said in a statement that the university Senate directed the closure of the institution with immediate effect.

He said: “This is to inform all students that the university Senate, at its emergency meeting held on 5th February 2018, directed the closure of the university with immediate effect. “This is as a result of
students’ unrest that occurred last night (on Sunday). Students are advised to vacate the university campus latest by 2p.m. today (Monday).”

Speaking with journalists, the Dean of Students Affairs, Dr. Lawan Haruna, described the religious incident as unfortunate.
He alleged that a student had posted on his WhatsApp a statement blaspheming Prophet Muhammed. Responding to a question, the Dean said the crisis had nothing to do with the election of the Students’ Union Government which was inaugurated last week. The Dean also said a 200 Level student at the Urban and General Planning Department was killed during the crisis.

But some fleeing students, who preferred to speak on condition of anonymity, said the crisis was not unconnected with the just conducted election which saw Christian students leading in all the elective positions. They claimed the results of the election did not go down well with the Muslim students who vowed the elected officers would not know peace.
They added that the rumour of the crisis was reported to the university authorities three days before it broke out without any positive response. “The crisis has nothing to with alleged post on WhatsApp,” one of them said.
