Four arrested for NURTW chairman’s aide’s murder

Detectives attached to the Special Anti- Robbery Squad (SARS), Lagos, have arrested four persons in connection with the murder of Mr. Ganiyu Ayinla, alias Peiro. Peiro was murdered at Idumota, Lagos Island area and was an aide to the Chairman of the National Union of Transport Workers (NURTW) Branch C, Idumota, popularly called Kunle Poly.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Imohimi Edgal, named the four suspects as Bashiru Bashorun (49) aka Abija, Sunday Balogun (43) aka Folori, John Oladokun (43) aka John Ibafo and Gbolahan Olowokere (34) aka Motherless Junior.

He said: “The peaceful atmosphere of House 1, John Street, Idumota, Lagos Island, was shattered on January 23, 2018, about 9p.m. when gunmen laid siege to the community.

They shot and killed their target. “The gunmen came in a wine coloured, tinted glass Toyota Camry car, with registration number KTU 713 EZ. They waited until their target was in sight, and in a gangster like manner, stormed out of the car with AK47 rifles and opened fire on their target. They killed Ganiyu Ayinla, Personal Assistant to Kunle Poly.

“On receiving the information about this dastardly act, operatives of the command swung into action, leading to the arrest of the four suspects. They were all arrested in Ibadan, Oyo State. The car used in the operation and a pump action gun were recovered. The suspects have all confessed to the crime, and went further to mention one Ade Lawyer, who is currently at large, as a co-participant in the crime.”
The commissioner, while commending the present leadership of the NURTW in Lagos State, urged the union to be more vigilant so as to weed out criminals and continue to work with the police at the state. He said: “There has been great improvement in peace under the present leadership of NURTW in the state.

They should be vigilant and should not allow the peace to be disturbed.” The commissioner said that the suspects would be charged with murder and other related offences. On January 23, Kunle Poly, after a meeting with unit chairmen at night, was seeing some friends off when gunshots rocked the night. Poly was in the midst of two policemen and Ayinla.
The policemen, Kunle’s guards, were said to have returned fire for fire, but they were hit by bullets. When the dust settled, the injured were rushed to the Island General Hospital where Ayinla was later confirmed dead.
