Detectives attached to the Inspector-General of Police Special Intelligence Response Squad (IRT), have smashed a robbery gang and arrested eight suspects.
According to the police, the gang specialized in car snatching and robbing apartments of residents of Abuja.
It was also gathered that most of the snatched car in
Abuja, are moved to Niger Republic, to buyers, who are already waiting.
The suspects are Felix Iheanacho 37, Emmanuel Manase 29, Daniel Talumun 26, Ibrahim Musa 32, Tayo oyemaki 24, Promise Ruben 25, Danjuma Mustapha 29 and Mustapha Labaran 42.
Iheanacho is alleged to be the gang leader, while Manase is the second in command. Police said that Danjuma, another alleged member of the gang, was a notorious stolen car receiver in Abuja and trans-border stolen car dealer. Labaran, on the other hand, allegedly specialised in conveying snatched cars from Nigeria to Niger Republic.
Three television sets and other items were recovered from the gang. A police source note that IRT detectives were already making moves to head to Niger Republic to retrieve two stolen vehicles.
Our correspondent gathered that between February 1 and 13, operative relentlessly hunted the gang members.
The hunt for the men yielded result and eight were finally arrested. Also arrested are the receivers of stolen cars supplied by the gang. The gang allegedly used to snatch vehicles in Nigeria and move them to Niger republic, where they sell them.
A police source said: “The downfall of the suspects started after the IGP, Ibrahim Idris, received series of complaints about robberies in the Apo and Madushi axis of Abuja. Investigation started after the gang robbed the house of Mr Nasir Yusuf, a staff of Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on January 22. The gang made away with two vehicles; Mercedes Benz E350 with chassis number WDBUF87X78B193442, Ford escape jeep 2.0 with chassis number 1FMCUOG9XDUC00691 and other expensive valuables and Gadgets in the house were carted away.”
The police alleged that all the suspects confessed to have taken part in multiple robberies in Abuja. They also allegedly disclosed vital roles each played to ensure operations were successful.
