Excursion: 22 students, teacher die in Kano auto crash

At least, 22 students and one of their teachers from Government Day Secondary School, Misau in Bauchi State yesterday died in an auto crash on Bauchi-Kano Road. The accident occurred about 11a.m. and involved a bus conveying the students on excursion to a radio station in Kano. The accident, according to a witness, occurred when the bus conveying the students had a head on collision with an articulated vehicle while they were both trying to avoid a pothole at Samia Uku village.

The witness, Ibrahim Adamu, told our correspondent that the accident occurred near Maitama Sule College by Dudduru after a diversion because of an ongoing road construction in the area. The Kano State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Magaji Musa Majiya, confirmed the story. He said: “It is true that already 22 students died instantly while a teacher is also dead.

Those that sustained injuries have been taken to the hospital. Majiya disclosed that the dead had also been evacuated to the morgue.
Also, the Public Relations Officer, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Kano, Mr. Kabir Ibrahim- Daura, confirmed the incident. Ibrahim-Daura said the accident occurred about 11a.m. near Tsaida village in Gaya Local Government Area. He also confirmed that the students were travelling to Kano for an excursion when their bus had a head on collusion with a DAF truck. But Ibrahim-Daura said the 22 students and their driver lost their lives in the accident while three others sustained serious injuries.
He said: “Of the 22 students, 12 are males while the remaining 10 are females.
“Two of the injured were taken to Gaya General Hospital while the remaining one has been referred to a Specialist Hospital in Kano.” Ibrahim-Daura also said the bodies had been deposited at the morgue of the Gaya General Hospital.
