Tanker explosion destroys million naira goods in Anambra

About six shops and goods believed to worth millions of naira were yesterday gutted by fire when a tanker carrying Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) otherwise called diesel caught fire at Nkwo market, Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area Aambra State. It was learnt that the tanker, which was coming from the Building Material Market end of Ogidi, through the by-pass to Ugwunwasike, rolled back, crashed, spilled its contents and caught fire. The tanker and about six shops were burnt.
Efforts of the firefighters from the Building Material Market, Ogidi, Okpoko, Government House and Onitsha Main Market to put out the raging fire were futile.
It was learnt that the smoke emanating from the tanker did not allow firefighters to quell the fire despite reinforcement from the Police from Ogidi led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Mr. Mark Ijarafu, and Special Anti -Robbery Squad (SARS) from Awkuzu, who also helped to control traffic. Traders thronged the market afraid of losing their goods to the raging fire but the ones that came around luckily had their shops intact. As at the time of filing this report, the fire was yet to be contained while vehicles had been restricted from passing through the area.
