The Family of a bus conductor, Kazeem Adeoye, who
was shot dead by a policeman attached to the Mopol 50, Abuja, Corporal
Oluwakiyesi Adegboyega, at Ketu, Lagos on November 5, has demanded N5m
compensation, PUNCH Metro has learnt.
A member of Adegboyega’s family, Olumide Adeitan,
told our correspondent that he was negotiating the compensation on behalf of
the policeman.
Adeitan contacted PUNCH Metro after our
report of December 18 in which the conductor’s wife, Kafayat Adeoye, demanded
justice for her husband’s death.
He said he was surprised that the victim had a
wife because negotiation was going on with some people who claimed they were
members of Kazeem’s family.
Adeitan said, “I was alarmed when I saw the
interview with the wife in the newspaper. I was not sure anymore whether we
were dealing with the real family.
“When they came they demanded N5m. Sina Nosiru is
the one who is negotiating on behalf of the family. We appealed to them that we
don’t have that kind of money and proposed N700,000.
“That’s where the negotiation stops at the
moment. The last time we met, we agreed that we would reach an agreement on or
before January 8.”
Our correspondent later contacted Kafayat, who
said Nosiru was truly related to her late husband.
Kafayat said, “He is Kazeem’s uncle. He once
mentioned that he was going to meet the policeman’s family. He (Nosiru) told me
he was concerned with the welfare of the child Kazeem left behind.
“He said he was going to try and get something
for my child for his upkeep. But he did not mention anything about money. I was
not aware of the demand for N5m. I only kept quiet and let him handle the issue
since he had told me the purpose was for the welfare of my child.”
But when Nosiru was contacted, he denied
demanding money on behalf of the family.
He said, Adeitan, who claimed to be negotiating
the deal on behalf of the policeman’s family “did not know what he was talking
about.”
Nosiru said, “I did not demand any money and
neither did any other member of the family. I only told Kafayat we would get
something for her child’s welfare because the Bus Conductors’ Association of
Nigeria members insisted they would take steps to demand justice.
“It is true I am his uncle and I am the one
handling the issue of his burial and I am representing the family at all front,
but I don’t know anything about N5m.”
PUNCH Metro learnt that the conductor is
still in the morgue.
The policeman’s family said they had contacted
the victim’s wife and given her some money for the burial arrangements.
His family said they had got his death
certificate, which must be presented before his corpse is released.
Nosiru said the policemen in charge of the
investigation would have to be notified in order to claim the corpse.
Our correspondent also learnt from a police
source that Adegboyega was being held at the State Criminal Investigation
Department.
Adegboyega shot Kazeem in the head at close range
with his service pistol after an altercation over a N50 change at Tipper
Garage, Ketu.
