Varsity Workers Write Jonathan, May Begin Strike On Monday

The non-teaching staff in Nigerian universities will begin a nation-wide strike on Monday, even as the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have commenced a seven-day warning strike over the non-implementation of an agreement reached with the unions since 2009.
 National President of Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Comrade Samson Ugwoke, said that the strike would begin across the country on Monday, November 10, 2012 if no steps were taken to resolve the issues involved in the said agreement.
However, in a letter to President Goodluck Jonathan and the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqquatu Rufai, the union said that the strike would affect all Federal and state universities across the country.
The letter which was also sent to the Minister of Labour, Chief Emeka Wogu and the Executive Secretary, National University Commission, Prof Okojie, disclosed that the strike was triggered by the failure of government to make provision for the payment of the Earned Allowance in the 2013 Federal Budget.
Another issue, according to the letter, is the report of the committee on NEEDS Assessment of Nigerian Public Universities, most especially the curious manner in which the government raised a white paper on the report of the committee, which impact directly on the continued existence of its members without any invitation or input from the Union.
