Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS)
have arrested a gang that specialized in using military and police uniforms to
steal motorbikes from riders.
A member of the three-man gang, Goodness Allison, 31, said that his members used to disguise as policeman and military officer in order to steal motorbikes from unsuspecting riders. Aside from Allison, other members of the gang are Wilson and Aboki.
According to him, they would first ‘impound’ the motorbikes and later resell them.
Allison actually became a member of the gang after the fake policeman and soldier arrested him for taking a restricted road.
His words: “I was co-opted into the team two weeks ago. Then, I was arrested at Bucknor by Wilson and Aboki on that fateful day around 9:48 p.m. They said I took a restricted road. I pleaded with them to let me go but they told me that I was going to take them somewhere. I took them to Ejigbo, where a boy was arrested. I assisted them to arrest the Hausa boy and we took his motorbike. I don’t know what they did with the motorbike, but the following day, they called me and offered me N10, 000. Unknown to me, it was the same spot where I seized the Hausa guy’s motorbike, which was my first operation with the gang, that I was arrested.”
Allison confessed that through the ruse, they had been able to steal over seven motor cycles from riders in Ejigbo, Ikotun and Bucknor. The gang used to operate from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Allison added: “We normally meet in Isheri Junction. But our last operation, Wilson, told me to meet him at Bucknor. Wilson dresses like soldier. He wears military polo, long sleeves with camouflage trousers and black shoes. Aboki wears black pullover with black trousers and shoes.”
He said he didn’t used to participate in the reselling of the stolen motorbikes.
He further said: “We pretend as policemen and seize motorcycles from riders. Some, we negotiate and collect money, but mostly we collect the motorcycles, especially if it was new.”
Allison, who said the motorbike he rides wasn’t one of the stolen ones, said he bought it on hired purchase.
Recalling how he became RRS guest, he said: “We were on operation to seize another motorcycle when I was arrested. Wilson and Aboki alighted from my motorbike, walked a few distance. I noticed they had been mobbed. But I wasn’t sure what exactly their offence was. I moved closer; one of the Hausa boys, whom I had personally seized motorcycle spotted me. I was mobbed. This was the time RRS came to rescue us. But by that time, my colleagues had been released by the mob. I took RRS detectives to the residence of Wilson and Aboki because they live together, unfortunately, we didn’t meet them at home.”
The Lagos State Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Dolapo Badmus, said the Command would be going after the other suspects.
