A pregnant woman, Mrs. Kafayat Somoye, and her five-year-old
daughter, Ganiyat, were yesterday killed when a building collapsed in
Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.
The incident occurred about 7a.m. at
Onifufu/Aderupaba compound, Oke-Ijeun area, Abeokuta, shortly after a
downpour.
It was learnt that Somoye was taking her two children, Ganiyat and
her brother, Ganiyu, when a dilapidated building suddenly collapsed.
While the boy escaped unhurt, both the mother and daughter were not
lucky as they were trapped by the collapsed wall. Witnesses said the
woman, who was threemonth- old pregnant, did not die on the spot but was
rushed to the nearby State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta.
She died later at the hospital. Policemen from Oke Itoku and Ibara
divisions mobilised to the area to prevent a breakdown of law and order
as some angry youths attempted to set ablaze the remains of the
building.
