IG orders demolition of houses near Arepo, Isawo creeks

Acting Inspector General of Police, Idris Ibrahim, yesterday ordered the immediate demolition of buildings near the creeks of Isawo and Arepo believed to be used by ‘bunkerers’ to syphon fuel.
Ibrahim, who was at Isawo community in Ikorodu, Lagos State on the second day of his visit to the state police command, also assured the residents of the area of adequate security.
The IG was conducted round the areas where the joint military force is fighting militants terrorising the coastal communities in Lagos and Ogun states by the Commanding Officer of the Military Tactical Base, Lt. Col. Julius Ogbobe.
He urged the fleeing residents Isawo and Arepo communities, which have been ravaged by the activities of the militants and pipeline vandals in recent times, to return and remain calm. Ibrahim said he was currently collaborating with sister agencies in providing security for the people.
He said: “I want you, the residents, to cooperate and work with the police by providing them with information on the activities of criminal elements within your vicinities because we are not spirits.” The IG, however, praised the military exercise being carried out in conjunction with the police to curb the activities of the militants in the area, tagged: Operation Awatse.
According to him, tremendous success has been achieved and the militants have been chased out completely. Ibrahim, who later addressed the policemen and other security operatives deployed in the area, commended them for their resilience and spirit of brotherliness to fight the militants.
He said: “I have come to see things for myself and I am also here to boost the morale of the officers and men of other security agencies who have been doing so much to curtail the activities of the militants and vandals. I am assuring you of our support.
And I will also ensure that more Marine policemen are deployed in this area.” The IG also encouraged the residents to support the police activities in the area. He added: “If you see bad persons, do report them to the police, because everyone has a responsibility to move the nation forward.”
Ibrahim thanked the residents for their cooperation. He urged them to support the security agencies to ensure that peace returns to the community. Welcoming the IG, Ogbobe explained the sketch of the locations of the militants and how they carried out the operations in the creeks.
He said: “We have made 11 arrests. We also recovered two locally-made guns, two generators, eight Dane guns, 32 live cartridges, two laptops, one magazine of AK 47 and one magazine of GPMG, one set of handcuffs, 18 machetes, two Mopol badges, two Ecobank withdrawal booklets, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voter cards and FCMB deposit slips.
