Two teachers in the employment of the Ondo State government, Messrs Olajuwon Adebayo and Sunday Ajenifuja, have been crushed to death by a trailer.
The incident occurred at Ipele junction in Owo Local Government Area.
Olajuwon and Ajenifuja, attached to Local Authority (LA) Primary School, Igbatoro/Familugba in Akure North Local Government Area, were on their way to school when they were crushed to death.
The driver, according to sources, was trying to avoid a pothole on the Owo-Akure Road when he rammed into the teachers waiting for vehicle that would take them to their school.
They were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo by some good Samaritans but they later died.
Olajuwon was the head teacher while Ajenifuja was his assistant. They were the only teachers posted to the school.
Although the school is located in Akure North Local Government Area, the road from Akure is not motorable which is why the alternative route is always through Owo-Ifon-Okeluse linking Familugba-Igbatoro.
The Education Secretary for Akure North, Samuel Olowere, who confirmed the sad incident, said the Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) had been informed for necessary action.
Reacting to the incident, the SUBEB Chairman, Princess Oladunni Odu, who spoke through the Director of Schools, Clement Adesuyi, described the incident as very sad and commiserated with the families of the deceased.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Femi Joseph, who confirmed the incident, described it as a case of ‘carelessness, reckless and dangerous driving by the trailer driver’.
Joseph identified the driver as Juwon Ariyibi, working with Cobil Limited, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The PPRO said Ariyibi was already in police custody and would be charged to court upon completion of investigation.
