Thunder kills one, injures three, destroys district head’s office

Thunder kills one, injures three, destroys district head’s office
One person was killed while three others were badly injured when thunder struck Tarka Local Government Area of Benue State, the home of Senate Minority Leader, Senator George Akume. Two main towns were affected by the thunder, Asukunya and Annune, headquarters of the council. The thunder also destroyed the office of the District Head of Tyoya Council Ward, Chief Anaibo Gwa. He was, however, not hurt. It was gathered that the incident occurred while it was raining.

The thunder struck one Terhemba Uloho who reportedly died instantly, while three other members of the same family sustained various degrees of injury. The local government Information Officer, Mr Bem Agbuku, told our correspondent yesterday that the first incident which occurred at Annune on Thursday destroyed a number of buildings, including the office of the district head of Tyoya. The following day, the thunder stuck again about 11.30pm.
Agbuku explained that those injured were rushed to a private hospital for treatment, adding that members of the family of the deceased were making arrangements for the burial of Uloho. He said: “The first incident occurred on Thursday morning and affected the office of the district head of Tyoya Council Ward in Tarka Local Government Area. Though no life was lost, the fire from the lightning hit the wall and it caught the rug in the office and reduced it to rubbles. It later spread to other buildings.
“Then at Asukunya, it happened about 11.30pm on Friday and killed one person. They were about six in number in a room sleeping. Considering the intensity of the rain, there was nothing they could do than to sleep in one room because the other room was leaking and therefore decided to join the deceased in his room.”
The thunder, according to him, killed Uloho while three of his younger brothers were injured. “The eyes of one of them were affected by lighting but he was immediately treated with rainwater and got relief,” Agbuku added. The information officer, who described the incident as a natural disaster, said the local government Chairman, Mr Peter Kwaghfan, had expressed sympathy with the district head, condoled with members of the family of the deceased family and prayed for the repose of Uloho’s soul. When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Daniel Ezeala, said the command had no report on that issue.
