Human trafficking is return to slave trade, says Jedy-Agba

The Executive Secretary of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons and Other Related Matters (NAPTIP) Mrs. Beatrice Jedy-Agba has said that human trafficking in persons represents a return of the abolished slave trade in Nigeria.

Speaking during the marking of the 2015 International Day of Remembrance for the victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade in Abuja, Jedy-Agba said that human trafficking has over the years, impacted negatively on the well-being of Nigeria and Nigerians.
Her words: It must be recognised that trafficking in persons is an obstacle to the realisation of the national development, aspirations of Nigeria as contained in the Vision 2020/20 document and the fulfillment of its obligations under international benchmarks such as the MDG’s and NEPAD.”
According to her, prevention remains the best strategy of curbing human trafficking.
She added: “Human traffickers are in our various communities, masquerading in various guises as helpers of the needy and promising to provide what they do not have capacity to provide. All these are just to deceive and lure unsuspecting persons away into slavery. We all must therefore, be conversant with our environment, be vigilant and ready to expose every suspicious offer from anyone, including relatives.”
