Oshodi boils as hooded, armed men run amok

Hundreds of hooded men went on the rampage today at the Oshodi area of Lagos State, armed with guns and machete, striking fear into the heart of residents.

They were alleged to have attacked innocent people and inflicted injuries on others.
The mayhem which started around 6: am witnessed many commercial buses quickly reversing, while many motorists abandoned their vehicles and fled.
A frightened lady said: “I was inside a commercial bus, heading to office when we saw them. Our driver quickly turned back. We all rushed, fearful for our lives. Many of us trekked to our offices.”
The hoodlums were noticed with various weapons ranging from guns, axes and machetes.
The hoodlums who were suspected to be supporters of a political group were first sighted at Charity Bus Stop.
 A resident said: “They went on the rampage and started attacking those who were going to their various work places. There was chaos everywhere as drivers in the various motor parks quickly discharged their passengers and fled, with some running into themselves. Shop owners quickly shut down.”

A faction of the Oodua People Congress (OPC) had been alleged by some traders in the market to be the hounded men, but police did not confirm this.
 A member of the National Union of Road Transports Workers(NURTW), Alhaji Musiliu Akinsayan, said: “We woke up to see this desperate hoodlums shooting, looting and vandalising people's property, led by one Easy oluwo and his boys.  I want to state that nobody has monopoly of violence, but my love for my people and that of Oshodi is uppermost in my mind. I have instructed my followers and good people of Oshodi to be calm.”
In a swift reaction, the National Coordinator of OPC, Otunba Gani Adams denied his faction involvement in the clash.
His words: “They should not link my OPC led faction to the clash. It came to us as a surprise. We are peace loving organization. We have good working relationship with the members of the NURTW.”
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kayode Aderanti, confirmed the incident, stressing that policemen and personnel from the Department of State Security tackled the hoodlums. “Immediately they sighted our men, they disappeared.”
