The late Edeh |
Since the news of the torture and eventual death of Chibyke Edeh in the hands
of the personnel of the Nigeria Police Force filtered out, the social media has
become busy, with many fuming over another senseless killing by the police in
Benin.
Indeed, some angry lawyers said they
were ready to take up the litigation battle for the deceased’s family pro-bono.
The deceased was said to have been
arrested at his place of work after the sum of N45, 000 went missing. Determined
to make him talk, the policemen who picked him, tortured him to death.
Signs of torture |
The cousin of Edeh, Don Meritson
Mba, said on his wall: “This is my cousin Chibyke Edeh. He was tortured to
death by police men. Until his arrest and murder, he was working with Protea Hotel
in Benin. He was accused of stealing N45, 000 from a guest in one of the rooms
he attended. He was detained and not granted bail. The police men tortured him
to say he was the one that stole the money but he stood his grand. He said that
it was better for him to die than accept he stole the money, he didn’t. The
police then asked the parents to go bring N27000 for his bail. By the time they
got back with the money, they were told he was dead.”
Protesting the murder of Edeh |
Prince Collins Igweanuba, responding to tortured
pictures of the young man, said: “Jesus Christ, what
kind of evil is this? Please this matter need to get to human rights department
of the United Nations. Please whoever this poster is inbox me the details of
this case or contact me on igwe_prince@yahoo.ca. Things like this have got to
stop. Please I need both the police station, the hotel and the manager name,
this boy’s parents and any other information you can lay hands on ASAP.”

said: “It’ll never be well with any policeman involved in this case.”
Chinonye Chinwe Nedoenu
fumes: “What is N45, 000 to this young man's life? Or is it 45 billion pounds? Where
is our country going to? I think it’s a plot against him from his co-workers.
God knows all. The owner of that hotel, the useless guest, prostitutes might
have made away with his rubbish blood money, they will all answer for this. Including
the idiotic police people.”
Owolola Adebola said: “Bottom of FormIn Nigeria, Life is not worth more than a Banana peel. The
police officers being paid with tax-payers money are law unto themselves. They
determine who should live and who should not...talk of a banana republic!”
One barrister Izunya said he
should be contacted for litigation by the family members of the deceased.
Ray Jean said: “Benin police are the biggest
criminal and worst police in Nigeria.”
Lind Erimma Arukwe said: “Oh God! This
is so wicked. I really don't know the right word to use at this point. It's
sad. I can rightly tell you that most times a guest can misplace his things.”
Princess Yvonne said: “I can't stop
crying. Please inbox me more details of the fact about the incident. I can't
fold my hands and watch this type of thing continue in Nigeria. Also, send me the
telephone number of the hotel where he worked and that of the Commissioner of
Police in charge of Benin zone.”

it was not enough to curse the police, adding that it was high time Nigerians
got up and challenged this sustained wickedness and barbarism by the police.”
