Two operatives of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Special Intelligence Response Team (IRT), who went to arrest the kidnappers that abducted four Britons in Delta State, are presently battling to stay alive in a hospital.
The two policemen, F/no 359454 Sergeant Sanusi Lanre and F/no:360140 Sergeant Agunbiade Adebayo, were part of the police teams that went after the kidnappers that abducted four Britons in Delta State and later killed one of the Britons identified as Ian Squire, 57.
The operation was led by the Officer in Charge (OC) of IRT, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP0, Mr Abba Kyari.
Lanre was shot in his stomach, while his colleague, Adebayo was shot in his two hands.
The good news, however, is that the team members of the two policemen, retaliated, killing the shooter.
The remains of the shooter had since been deposited in a mortuary, while the two policemen are presently in a hospital. Lanre was rushed to theatre for an emergency surgery.
A police source said: “On November 8, IRT operatives were deployed to Delta State in pursuit of the kidnappers that abducted four British citizens at the Burutu area of Delta State. The Britons were abducted on October 13. The IRT operatives successfully arrested two of the kidnappers in Warri Delta State.
“The arrested kidnappers confessed and volunteered to lead the IRT operatives to arrest the other gang members in Sapele Town. On reaching Sapele, one of the kidnappers sighted the attested gang member with the IRT operatives advancing stealthily. In a blink of an eye, he whipped out a Barrette Pistol and opened fire. He shot Sanusi Lanre in the Stomach and Agunbiade Adebayo on his two hands. Other IRT team members immediately returned fire for fire. They gunned down the kidnaper and retrieved the Barrette pistol from him. The two injured IRT operatives are admitted in Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DESUTH) Oghara, where Sanusi Lanre is undergoing emergency surgery as at 3am, Thursday.  The dead body of the kidnapper has been deposited at same hospital mortuary. Four pints of blood and other items requested for the surgery was provided. Several senior officers are on ground in the hospital to assist the injured officers.”
