Seven people, including women, were arraigned at an Ikorodu Magistrate’s Court in Lagos State for allegedly battering a Divisional Police Officer, DPO, while on his way to perform his official duty.
The accused are Kehinde Alimot, 40,
Bukola Ahmed, 32, Ifeanyi Kanu, 32; Owolabi Ibrahim, 22, Aikulola Olamijin, 54
and Jamiu Yusuf 39. They are all residents of Ikorodu, Lagos State.
The accused persons were arraigned
before Magistrate A.B. Adelabu-Olagbegi, on a three-count charge bordering on
conspiracy, unlawful assault and causing a breach of peace. However, they
all pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The magistrate granted them bail in
the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum. The sureties, according to
the magistrate, must also be house owners within the magisterial district and
must also show evidence of three years tax payment.
The case was adjourned until
December 14, 2017, for further hearing. The Police Prosecutor, Sergeant Mary
Ajiteru, had earlier told the court that the accused committed the offences on
October 26, along Agunfoye Road, Igbogbo in Ikorodu around 12.45 a.m.
The Prosecutor said the accused,
including a nursing mother, battered Supol Issah Lawal, who is the DPO attached
to the Igbogbo Police Station.
She said: “On sighting the DPO, who
was on his way to work, they battered him seriously, even though he was in
police uniform.”
According to her, the offences
contravened Sections 411, 168 (d), 174(b) of the Lagos State Criminal Code
Laws, 2015.
