Police in Ogun State have
arrested a woman, Mrs. Rose James Michael, for allegedly inflicting
life-threatening injuries on her eight-year-old stepdaughter.
The suspect, who resided
at No 10, Onofowokan Street, Ita-Oluwa via Ogijo, Sagamu, was said to have
used a razor blade to inflict deep cuts on her stepdaughter, Blessing.
Michael, however, blamed
her action on the devil, stressing that she didn’t know what came over her.
Michael carried out the attack to avenge the beating of her little
daughter by Blessing.
The Ogun State Police
Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the arrest of the
woman in a statement made available yesterday to reporters in Abeokuta.
Oyeyemi, an Assistant
Superintendent of Police, disclosed that the suspect was arrested
following a complaint from her husband, James Michael.
Oyeyemi said: "The
suspect was arrested following a complaint from her husband, James Michael, who
reported that his wife called him on phone while he was away at work and
informed him that his daughter, Blessing, beat her little daughter and injured
her on her leg and that she was going to injure her too in revenge. The
complainant stated further that he pleaded with her on phone to wait for him to
see what actually happened. But before his arrival, the woman had used razor blade
to inflict deep cuts on the little girl’s two hands and thigh, consequently
upon which the victim was bleeding profusely. Upon the complaint, the
Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ogijo Police Station, SP Tijani Muhammed,
detailed detectives to effect the arrest of the suspect."
The PPRO pointed out that
upon interrogation, the suspect owned up to committing the offence. Oyeyemi
stated that the victim had already been taken to a private hospital in Ogijo
for medical attention.
Oyeyemi added: "The
Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered the immediate transfer of
the case to Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of Criminal
Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation and
possible prosecution of the suspect. He equally warned that the Command would
not tolerate any act of wickedness and man’s inhumanity to man in whatever
form."
