N30m fraud: Contractor remanded in prison for defrauding best friend

Ajigbotafe
A   contractor, Akinyemi Ajigbotafe, has been remanded in prison custody by a Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos State for allegedly defrauding his best friend to the tune of N30m.
The accused was said to have committed the crime under the pretence that he wanted to clear, dredge and sand fill 20 acres of land for his best friend, Lucky Martins Igbokwe, at Awoyaya Town, Ibeju Lekki area of the state.

Ajigbotafe, described as a strong member of All Progressive Congress (APC) in Alimosho Local Government Area, was arrested after he allegedly defrauded Igbokwe.
Ajigbotafe and Igbokwe were said to have been very good friends for years before the N30million scam deal tore them apart.

The contractor was alleged to have convinced Igbokwe to pay him N10million as balance for a job he knew he had not done. He collected the N10million, after he had initially collected N20million from Igbokwe.
Ajigbotafe was said to have produced fake pictures to convince his friend that he was already executing the work. It was later discovered that everything was fake and project was yet to commence.
Igbokwe, who did not suspect anything was amiss, made all payment to Ajigbotafe, hoping that his project was going on according to plan.
When Igbokwe eventually discovered that he had been scammed, he petitioned the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (CIID), Panti, Yaba, Lagos State, leading to the arrest and subsequent arraignment in court of Ajigbotafe.
The accused was arraigned for obtaining money under false pretence, thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 1(1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offence Act, Cap A6, 2004.
The presiding Judge, Hon. Justice Babs Kuewumi, struck out the bail application for lacking in merit, and other orders as may seem fit in the circumstance of the case.

Speaking with our correspondent, Ajigbotafe who wept in the court said that he was innocent of the allegation leveled against him. According to him, he was already executing the project before he was arrested and arraigned.
