Police arraign Chief Imam, another for breach of peace

Police in Ogun State have charged the Chief Imam of Ajebandele Ijebu community in Ijebu East Local Government, Alhaji Ramoni Igbalaye, to court over felony and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

Igbalaye was arraigned alongside one Mr Adetutu Ajayi at the Magistrate's Court IV, Ijebu-Ode on Wednesday.

New Telegraph gathered that the Chief Imam was charged in connection with "wrongful installation" of Ajayi as the new Baale of the community.

It was learnt that the Ajalorun of Ijebu-Ife, Oba Adesesan Oguntayo, had in 2011 installed Alhaji Moshood Abiola Kuku as the rightful Baale of the community.

However, the police declared that Igbalaye committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 516 of the 2006 Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State.

According to the charge sheet before the Magistrate Court, the Chief Imam also committed an offence contrary to and punishable under section 249 of the 2006 Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State.

But the defendants' counsel's absence at the court stalled the continued hearing of the case.  The Magistrate, Mrs Y S Alebiosu Adebayo, frowned at the absence of the defence counsel without any official notification.

Adebayo promised to continue with the case at the next adjournment date with or without the presence of the counsel to the accused. The case was adjourned to November 27 for further hearing.
