Obafunwa said the days of sweeping the wrongs under the carpet were gone for good in the university, even as he admitted that though many untoward behaviours and activities had been permitted in the past. The Vice-Chancellor, the Lagos State University (LASU), Prof Oladapo Obafunwa, said his stance against culture of impunity and corruption was responsible for the crisis rocking the institution.
The VC, who disclosed this during an interactive session with journalists, said his opposition to the rot in the ivory tower led to the creation of power blocks in the institution, especially from those who wanted the system to continue unabated.
He added that investigation had also commenced into how the PhD certificates erroneously awarded were issued in the first instance, explaining that the criticisms against him were as a result of his resolve to deal with the rot in the system before the end of his tenure.
According to him, many untoward and unethical practices have been going on in the university before he came on board as the vice-chancellor.
He said: “People do wrong things and sweep them under the carpet in the name of LASU being a big family which must keep and condone acts of academic and financial indiscipline.”
Obafunwa vowed to ensure that proper investigation was carried out with a view to unravelling the perpetrators of “certificate mess” in the university, adding that some members of staff must have been benefiting from the rot. He said: “We must be bold enough to look at people straight in the face and take certain positions.
The age of mediocrity and sweeping things under the carpet is over. “Could all these have happened without some level of compromise from the Dean? The answer is yes. So, we are also looking at that. I do not want people to say that we are only focusing on people that have benefitted from it. We are also looking at the system.
Why should this happen? Who and who allowed this to happen?” The VC explained that some of the PhD certificates without problems would be re-issued while those awarded in the programmes not approved by the Senate would be completely withdrawn.http://newtelegraphonline.com/corruption-behind-lasu-crisis-says-vc/
