Invasion of House of Reps: Police arrest 7

• We’re satisfied with policemen’s conduct —Spokesman

THE police have arrested seven suspects in connection with the fracas that occurred on Thursday within the premises of the House of Representatives.
Police spokesman, Emmanuel Ojukwu, a Commissioner of Police, said the police were satisfied with the way policemen at the National Assembly operated a cordon that led to the teargassing of Speaker Aminu Tambuwal.
Ojukwu, who spoke on Friday at a press conference in Abuja, said: “The policemen on ground acted according to their discretion and to the best of their ability. I am satisfied with what the policemen did yesterday (Thursday). The thing is that law and order must be respected at all cost and at all times.”
He explained that the police mounted the cordon following intelligence reports and comments attributed to stalwarts of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who had, on Wednesday, picketed the Force Headquarters and promised to invade the offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the National Assembly and the presidency.
Ojukwu stated that other members of the National Assembly who conducted themselves in an orderly manner had been searched and cleared to enter the premises, noting that the Speaker arrived with a crowd of thugs.
He said the Speaker refused to be searched and six of the hoodlums attacked a policeman, after which the police teargassed the Speaker and his riotous crowd so as to restore order.
Ojukwu said six persons had been arrested in connection with the fracas, while investigations were still ongoing.
He said those found culpable would be prosecuted.
The police image maker denied that the police were working on the authorisation of the president.
He also denied allegation that the police locked the gate on sighting the Speaker.http://tribune.com.ng/news/top-stories/item/22249-invation-of-house-of-reps-police-arrest-7
