Hummm. The rippling water has become stormy. Power play
between the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba and Speaker of the
House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, took a nasty turn yesterday, with Tambuwal
demanding that Abba should be jailed.
In a suit against the IGP, Tambuwal through his counsel, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, who led eight other SANs and 69 lawyers had brought a motion ex parte praying the court directing the IGP to appear in person to show why he should not be committed to prison for disobeying the order of court which earlier directed that status quo be maintained.
The plaintiff alleged that the IGP against the order of the court on November 20 denied Tambuwal access to the National Assembly to perform his official functions.
He further submitted that the IGP on November 26 while appearing before the House Committee on Police Affairs refused to recognise Tambuwal as the speaker of the House.
He, however, noted that President Goodluck Jonathan had on three occasions via different correspondence recognised Tambuwal as the speaker contrary to the actions of the IGP.
The trial judge, Justice A.R Mohammed, asked the plaintiff to put the IGP on notice and at the same time serve him all the applications.
The court premised the ruling on the ground that the IGP is already a party in the subsisting suit and as such joined issues.
After listening to all parties in the suit, the court fixed December 1 for ruling.
As the power play and intrigues continue, make we just sidon dey look.
How will this play out? Do you know? What’s your summation? Who go win?
