A soldier was among 27 people killed after unknown gunmen invaded ‘Ungwan Kwalla’ village in Ibi Local Government Area of Taraba State. Several people were also severely injured.
The gunmen were said to have set buildings on fire and shot at any moving figure. Many of the villagers scampered for safety. When the smoke cleared from the smoking guns, a soldier and 26 others were dead.
Some of the villagers alleged that the gunmen came from the neighbouring Plateau State in the early hours of Saturday.
The gunmen invaded the village and started shooting sporadically at the residents and torched several houses before fleeing the area.
Police spokesman, ASP Joseph Kwaji, however insisted that only nine people, among them a soldier, were killed.
He further said that armed militia men of Yargam extraction from neighbouring Plateau State were suspected to have launched the attack, adding that no arrest had been made.
