AVOID FIGHTING, WORK IN UNITY, OKIRO ADVISES NEW IGP

Okiro
The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Sir, Dr. Mike Mbama Okiro, a retired Inspector General of Police, today led the Management of the Commission to receive the new acting Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris and the newly inaugurated Management team of the Force who were in the Commission on a courtesy visit.

Dr. Okiro said for the acting Inspector General and the Management team to succeed, there was need for them to avoid infighting and the pull him down syndrome. While pledging the support and cooperation of the Commission, the Chairman said the success or failure of the IGP is that of the entire team, advising that the new Management team should rally round their boss.

He noted that both the new IGP and the Management team must work for the common good of the Police and the country, stressing that they should not see it as if it is the time of the IGP. “Work like a team and I can assure you that the Commission will give you all the required support to succeed”.

Dr. Okiro said it was important that the team came on the visit so that they and the Commission can rob minds and see how to solve the existing and envisaged problems facing the Nigerian Police Force. “We have to work together to create the necessary impact since we all have roles to play in the internal security chain to ensure efficiency and effectiveness”. He also advised that they obey court orders since the Police is not above the law.

The Chairman noted that the relationship between the Commission and the Nigeria Police Force had been cordial and urged the new acting IGP to ensure that this cordial relationship is maintained in the interest of both parties and the nation. He called for the inclusion of the PSC Act in the curriculum of the Police Colleges since according to him most of the Rank and File and even some senior police officers do not know much about the Commission.

Earlier, the acting IGP noted the critical role of the Commission in ensuring checks and balances in the work of the Nigeria Police Force. He said he will continue to respect the Commission adding that for the Police to progress, it needs the support and cooperation of the Commission.

He solicited for this support and cooperation and noted that both the Police and the Commission have distinct Constitutional roles and responsibilities all geared towards protecting lives and property and maintaining peace and order.
