Man wrestles robber for beating wife

Mr. Viho Segun, a victim of armed robbery, has told how he wrestled a suspected robber, after the suspect beat his wife to pulp.
The suspected robber, Bashir Wasiu, 22, and two of his gangs, were said to have waylaid Segun on his way to work and later dragged him back to his residence.
The bandits further threatened to shoot him in the presence of his wife and children if they didn’t submit the valuables they were demanded for.
Before Segun realized what was happening, Wasiu pounced on his wife, beating her black and blue.
Despite the guns pointed at him, Segun couldn’t stomach the beating his wife was receiving. He jumped on Wasiu.
Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Ikeja, Lagos State Police Command, arrested Wasiu at Ikotun area of the metropolis.
The RRS operatives also arrested another suspect, Tunde Adedeji, 23, at Olodi Apapa, area of Lagos State.
The RRS men recovered gun, jewelry, laptop and 18 mobiles phones from the robbers. Both suspects were arrested at the early hours of Tuesday.
The police said: “Bashir, on Tuesday morning, in the company of his two other members, waylaid Viho Segun at his residence’s car park. They snatched his documents, phones and N15, 000 from him at gun point. They then lead him to his flat, intending to collect more valuables from his family.”
At Segun’s flat, Wasiu threatened to kill him in the presence of his children and wife if they failed to produce more valuables. The robbers smashed Segun’s head with the butt of a gun and beat the wife to pulp.
Segun said: “When he started beating my wife, I summoned courage and engaged him in a fight. As soon as we started fighting, his colleague took to his heels. He too tried to run, but I held him. I called out to neighbours, seized his gun and just in the nick of time, RRS officers on patrol arrived.”
Recollecting the fateful day he met his waterloo, Wasiu said: “We have been monitoring Segun. We knew he used to home, for work, very early in his car. We decided to ambush him. We were three; Michael and I followed him into his flat to collect more money, while Joseph monitored outside. The three of us met at a point near boundary in Ajegunle. That was where we planned and set out for our operations. We used to operate early morning and late evenings.”
“The second robbery suspect, Adedeji and his 10-member robbery gang invaded Muslim, Omotayo Streets, where they robbed all occupants of three buildings. Two of the three buildings are in Muslim Street, while the third building is in Omotayo Street,” said a police source.
According to the source, over 25 robbery victims, residing in the three buildings, were attacked and robbed.  Most of the victims sustained machete cuts injuries.
The victims, who came to Alausa, Ikeja, in three fully loaded commercial buses, were invited one after the other, to identify the suspects. They also identified their belongings from the 18 mobile phones, trinkets and assorted jewelry recovered from the knapsack of the suspect.
Adedeji said: “Around 12midnight on this fateful day, Sadiq, Sule, Ijoba, myself and six others, whose names I don’t know, met and discussed about the robbery. I was invited into the operation by Sadiq. We met at Ikotun Egbe. We discussed the plan and around 2:00 a.m., we converged at Ikotun Roundabout. The arms we used for the operation machetes, wood and sticks. None of us had a gun. We used our legs to break down the doors and took phones, jewelry, laptops from our victims. All the recovered items in my hands were from the victims. Sule and I were coming from the operation around 4:00 a.m. when a local security man intercepted us.
“He collected Sule’s bag. We ran away just as he was opening the bag. But, I was later arrested by RRS officials of patrol after seeing the content of my bag.”
Adedeji claimed this was his second operation with the gang. He said that in June, he and gang members also robbed another house in Ikotun.
He said: “We sell all what we take to one guy called Tablet. Sule normally call him on phone after the operation and we meet him at Olugbede in Egbeda area.”
The Police State Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the arrest, adding that the police are not resting on its oars. She stressed that the Command would continue to work round the clock to reduce crime in the state.
