Chibuike spent nearly two months in detention, in what the state Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ojukwu, described as “protective custody”.
The primary 2 pupil of Carmelite Nursery and Primary School, Nike Avenue, GRA, Enugu, who was put in police custody since May 30, was released to his mother, Mrs. Nwakaego Oramalu, late afternoon yesterday. But the boy had already missed his third term examination and was terribly sick, although he was reportedly given treatment at the police hospital while in detention.
Ojukwu confirmed that Chibuike was accused of accidentally killing somebody (a neighbour’s child) with a gun, and his mother, Mrs. Nwakaego Oramalu, a single mother of five children were taken into “protective custody” by the police, although the mother was released after some days while Chibuike remained in custody.
He said that the boy and his mother were being sheltered by a prominent man, but the boy was cleaning the man’s house when he saw the gun and started playing with it. According to him, and the gun went off, killing another boy in the next compound, prompting neighbours to threaten to kill the boy and burn the house, hence police had to intervene.https://newtelegraphonline.com/police-release-seven-year-old-boy-detention/
