The state Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Godwin Omiko, told journalists yesterday in Lokoja, Kogi State, that the officials were shot dead by the bandits. Two officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Olaoluwa Adebayo and Adesina Iyanda, were reportedly killed by bandits suspected to have attacked Kotonkarfe Prison on Sunday, where 144 inmates were freed.
Omiko said that the slain marshals were among the six personnel on night duty at the FRSC office at Kotonkarfe town on the fateful day. He said that the officials fled into the bush upon hearing the sporadic gunshots from the bandits.
The FRSC boss added that the slain officials were hiding in a nearby bush when the bandits sighted them and abducted them. Omiko, who said that he was informed of the incident almost immediately, disclosed that FRSC men, policemen and local vigilantes began a search for his officials early Monday morning.
The effort, according to him, did not yield result until Tuesday evening when a woman in the town, who went into the bush to fetch firewood, discovered their bodies.
“The woman perceived odour and saw flies everywhere. She later traced the odour to a spot where she used a stick to scratch the ground and saw a body,’’ Omiko said.
He said that the woman ran out of the bush and raised the alarm which attracted other villagers. According to him, some FRSC officials, policemen and community men later went with the woman into the bush to ascertain her claim.
The sector commander said the bodies were immediately retrieved from the shallow grave where they were buried, adding that they were shot in the head at a close range. He said: “They removed their uniforms before shooting them.
They used their lanyard and shoelaces to tie their hands and legs and we saw bruises all over their bodies which means that they were dragged over a distance before being killed.”
According to him, the gunmen went away with the uniforms, service belts, shoes, identity cards, ATM cards, official and personal mobile phones of the victims.
He said that the bodies of Adebayo and Iyanda who both hailed from Kwara State had been deposited at the Ankuri Hospital’s morgue in Lokoja.
Omiko said that Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada, FRSC headquarters in Abuja and security agencies in the state had been informed of the incident.http://newtelegraphonline.com/gunmen-kill-two-frsc-marshals/
