Mubi: Experts divided over calls for CDS, Jonathan to resign

Mubi: Experts divided over calls for CDS, Jonathan to resign
There have been fireworks after the dreaded Islamist sect; Boko Haram again captured Mubi, in Adamawa State and renamed it Madinatul Islam, meaning the city of Islam.
The insurgents did not only take over Mubi, they also kidnapped young girls paying each of their parents N5,000. After capturing the town, they started patrolling the area, signaling that the group was fully in charge.

Since the event, opposition parties, and indeed, several people on social media have called for the resignation of President Goodluck Jonathan and the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Air Chief Marshal, Alex Badeh, as well as ministers from Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, among others to resign their positions in view of the resurgence in Boko Haram attacks. Former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, condemned Jonathan’s administration, stressing it is not honest about the security situation in the North.
He said: “If you control the armed forces and you are the Commanderin- Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic, why should any part of this country be under occupation and you give us excuses every day? In any civilised country, Jonathan should resign!” APC National Vice Chairman (North- East), Mr. Babachir David Lawal, said Jonathan was too busy planning his re-election to have time to protect the people in the North-East.
Lawal said: “These are trying times indeed and all the good sons and daughters of the North-East, no matter their current status in the society, must stand up for the region. If we continue to remain silent, who will speak for our people? Now that the government has abandoned the region, who will defend it other than its natives? Our farmlands, schools and all forms of commercial activities have been abandoned, thus rendering our future bleak.
Our sons are being massacred daily while our daughters are being taken into slavery or married off to depraved, uneducated and evil people who place no value on life.” Reacting to the call for Jonathan to resign, Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to Jonathan, Dr. Doyin Okupe said of APC members: “They missed it completely. As a party, they are very clueless and they don’t know anything about the basic rudiments of governance.
Which country in the world has the leader been asked to resign because the nation is at war? APC is an assemblage of political charlatans who want to attain power by all means, including through dubious means. Constitutionally, the only way to change power is through an election, which involves parties presenting candidates and canvassing for votes.
APC, knowing they can’t woo the electorate to their side, are resorting to subterfuge to take power. It won’t happen!” A former Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Tsav (rtd) said that the call for the resignation of the CDS and President Jonathan over the worsening security situation in the country was reasonable and in order.
Tsav explained that in civilized and less corrupt countries, the CDS ought to be in the front line to direct operations, but here in Nigeria, the CDS was in the comfort of his office, talking big and telling lies without results. Tsav said: “The CDS’s home is under siege by insurgency and, as the number one Military Officer in the Country, he is helpless! Another issue is that if the CDS is a man of honor and integrity, he should have long resigned in protest over the involvement of the CAN President in the South Africa arms scandal.
In Nigeria, people have no conscience. What matters to them are the offices and the financial benefits and influences they derive from such offices. A shame indeed! “In the case of Mr. President, he took an oath to provide security and wellbeing for the people of Nigeria and to do justice to all manner of people.
Has he done this? No! From the onset of this insurgency, the President was advised to dialogue with Boko Haram, but he said he would not dialogue with ghosts. When the CHIBOK girls were abducted, he doubted the authenticity of this report. Today the CHIBOK girls have been in captivity for 210 days. The President does not give a damn! He is more of a PDP President than a Nigerian President. He is more active in taking decisions on political matters if such matters involve the PDP.
Nigeria under President Jonathan has lost its bearing and is now at a cross roads. “Jonathan has woefully failed as a President and should throw in the towel. All persons supporting Jonathan are beneficiaries of his corrupt administration. Such people must realize that no matter the position they hold, the wealth they amass, they will not escape God’s judgement!”
Chief Executive Officer/Principal Consultant at Zenith Intelligence & Security Solution Limited, Mr. Ethelbert Oney said that resignation of Jonathan was not the option or the solution to Nigeria’s terrorism predicament. He said: “If the President resigns, it means absolute victory for Boko Haram and their sponsors. What Nigeria needs is total unification and support in all fronts to the President. Resignation is not and never would be the best solution in a terrorism situation for any president anywhere in the world.
He further said: “With regards to our Chief of Defence Staff, it may be argued that he has made no impact with the situation in Nigeria since he came on board. In developed countries, it may be construed as a sign of incompetence per se, hence calls for his resignation. However, if the truth be told and resignation becomes the only option and solution to our problems, the lots of heads, governors, ministers, senators, commissioners, chairmen of LGAs and traditional rulers will follow suit.”
Oney argued that what Nigerians needed was to be told the truth and be willing to face the problems confronting them. According to him, this confrontation would bring lasting solution. “If other countries could end terrorism in their respective countries, why can’t we? We just need the willingness of Nigerians,” said Oney.
Barrister Azubuko Joel Udah, Deputy Inspector General of Police (rtd), said that resignation was never the answer since it was tantamount to capitulation by government and an invitation to anarchy. He urged that all efforts must be made by the citizenry, particularly those from the insurgency areas to support the government and the military to bring an end to the problem. “Solution to the problem must not be straight-jacketed. Those at the helm of affairs should start thinking of the solution outside the box,” said Udah.
