Yobe massacre: Senate summons service chiefs

The Senate Committee on Defence and Army has again invited the Service Chiefs to appear before it today and update it on the progress of military operations in the North-East and the attendant inhibiting challenges.

The summon was sequel to the recent bombing of the Government Science School in Yobe State, by a suicide bomber, which killed many students and left several others with varying degrees of injuries.
Briefing journalists on the invitation of the military leadership, the chairman of the committee, Senator George Sekibo, expressed serious concern that elections were fast approaching without insurgency in the affected areas coming to an end the inhabitants of the region would do if the war continued till the time of elections.
His words: “I believe that we cannot stay here while we have not heard from the service chiefs. That is why we have summoned the service chiefs to appear on Thursday by one o’clock. We want to hear from them, to know areas they have problems and whatever the problems will be, we want to advise them to properly open up because Nigerians are tired of asking the same questions.
“We want to ask questions different from what we had been asking. I believe everyone is worried, especially after the last bombing in the school in Yobe State. Meanwhile, Senate President, David Mark has urged the Federal Government to fight the Boko Haram insurgents with all available resources, just as he also invited the sect to dialogue with government and end the senseless killings.
Mark spoke during plenary while decrying the massacre of students by a suicide bomber at the Government Science School, Potiskum in Yobe State. He described the school bomb attack as the height of the sect’s atrocities in the country. Mark described the attack as barbaric and inhuman, saying “it is condemnable by any right thinking member of the society.”
