An Osun State High Court sitting in Osogbo on Thursday sentenced the prime suspect in the June 14, 2007 bomb blast at the Osun State Governor’s Office at Abere, to death by hanging.
This is what I have been saying. Any person, caught or found guilty of involvement in bomd explosions, should be sentenced immediately. Such cases should be given prompt attention, hearing and trial. I applaud the judge.
The convict, Mr Richard Abayomi Adesanmi, loaded the bomb in a Peugeot 504 saloon car with registration number AL 850 NND, which was detonated in front of the state Ministry of Water Resources and Rural Development where the explosion took place.
The blast claimed the life of one Taye and damaged many vehicles. Seeing the development, two other occupants of the vehicle, Henry and Gboyega Olasogba, escaped and disappeared since then.
After concluding their investigation, the police attributed the substance that exploded in the vehicle to an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
Adesanmi was convicted on all the six-count charge bordering on murder and conspiracy to effect unlawful purpose.
The prosecution was led by the former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Wale Afolabi and the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Mr Dapo Adeniji, while Mr Wilson Atirene represented the accused.
In his judgement, Justice Adeyinka Aderibigbe said the evil-perpetrator would die by hanging till he breathed his last breadth on earth. Aderibigbe had earlier ruled on the first five-count of the charge.
He slammed a combined sentence of 40 years jail term with no option of fine on Adesanmi for the first five-count.
