Why Boko Haram killed 30, destroyed our homes-Witness

When Boko Haram members attacked oil-rich Gajiganna, in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno State on Thursday, scared residents scampered to different directions for safety. Over 30 people were killed and many homes destroyed. A survivor tells the story.

The survivor, Kalli Abdullahi, said that the insurgents who attacked the area were of the Manga tribe from Chad Republic, who now governed most parts of the Northern Borno.
His words:  “The Boko Haram sect members preside over meetings in most of the villages, execute judgment among the people and police most of the community.
“In fact, about one week to the attack, there was problem between one of our friends and a Fulani man, who put his cows in the farm of our friend. For lack of presence of the legal authorities, we had to report the matter to them (Boko Haram sect members); they came and gave the Fulani man one day ultimatum to which he agreed and paid amount equivalent to five bags of beans.”
He said the villagers learnt that some people went and informed security operatives in Maiduguri about one of the villagers, who said he were joining the Boko Haram sect because government did not care for them, leading to soldiers invading the village and arresting some people.
“That was the reason the Boko Haram sect came, took some people and killed them. When we thought that was all, they suddenly started burning houses and those of us who were lucky, escaped, but we did not get to Maiduguri until Saturday morning.”
Abdullahi also told the Nigerian Tribune that from Abadam Local Government Area to Kukawa, Marte, Ngala, Dikwa, Mobbar, Nganzai, Magumeri, Marte, Kala-Balge, and Monguo in the Northern Borno, there was no security presence, except in the local government headquarters.
It was gathered that all the villages surrounding the northern Borno was under the protection of the Boko Haram sect, who police the whole area.
He said most of the villages knew no peace, as any suspicion from the Boko Haram meant death.
“ Whatever you are doing, they watch; they monitor every movement, the people you meet with and sometimes called you to ask what you discussed or what you heard people discussing. If you lied, they knew got such killed. So, the people, out of fear, always told them everything they knew.”
