Detectives attached to the Lagos State Police Command have arrested
two men for being in possession of a locally made gun.
The suspects,
Toheeb Anifowose, 29 and Michael Oguava, 26, said they were remorseful
for their lives of crime and begged Nigerians and government to forgive
them.
They cried: “Please forgive us, we’ll never steal again. Government
should pardon us!” According to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police,
Mr. Fatai Owoseni, the two friends, Toheeb Anifowose and Michael Oguava
were arrested for being in possession of a locally made cut to size
double barrel gun and a live cartridge.
Owoseni said both suspects had allegedly confessed to using the gun for robbery.
Toheeb and Michael, who insisted that the gun didn’t belong to them,
said they were at their favourite spot, drinking and smoking on May 17,
2016, when three of their friends came to the spot to speak with them
about a robbery operation.
Toheed said: “While we were drinking, Tunde and two others came to
tell us that they now had guns. They said they wanted to rob in the
night and asked if we were interested.
Our work was usually to snatch valuables from people returning from
work, but because we were broke, we decided to go with them for the
robbery operation. We needed quick money.”
Toheeb, a tricycle rider, further said: “We were waiting for
nightfall before embarking on the operation when some policemen appeared
out of nowhere and attempted to arrest us. At this point, we all
scampered in different directions.
We all got separated that night. I was lucky to escape, but they
arrested Michael.” He continued his narration: “After that night, I went
home in the morning to freshen up.
When I got home, I took my bath. As I was about to go out, I saw
Michael with policemen. I couldn’t run anymore.” Michael, a cobbler, on
the other hand, said he had never been involved in robbery before.
According to him, he was an expert in snatching people’s valuables
along the roads. He, however, confessed that he accepted to go on the
aborted robbery operation with his friends because he needed money to
establish his shoe cobbling business.
Toheeb and Michael who expressed regrets for their lives of crime,
said: “If the government will be merciful enough to overlook our crimes,
we promise never to indulge in crime again.”https://newtelegraphonline.com/forgiveus-wellnever-stealagain-suspectsbeg/
