Hundreds of former workers at the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCEC) yesterday paralysed activities at the Lagos State Governor’s Office, Alausa, Ikeja, for several hours.
The sacked workers were protesting what they described as inhuman treatment meted out on them by the Chinese construction company handling the Lagos Light Rail Project.
They stormed the Governor’s Office with their colleagues who have been maimed while working for the construction company.
The protesters said many of their colleagues had lost their lives while others lost their arms, legs and eyes while working for the firm. The workers barricaded the roads leading to the Governor’s Office.
They called on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode to step into the matter and address the problem of continued maiming of their colleagues without insurance and safety measures.
Bemoaning their dismissal by the firm, the protesters demanded N500,000 and N800,000 as entitlements for laying them off after they had worked for four years and above.
One of them, Okila Mark, said he lost his right arm when it was trapped inside the ‘Winch Machine,’ while working at the National Theatre Precast Yard. Mark said workers the firm was treating workers as slaves.
