Upsurge in cult activities, insecurity unsettles Imo community

Worried by the resurgence of cult-related and other criminal activities within its vicinity, the Egbu community in Owerri North Council Area of Imo State has resorted to self-help, having concluded arrangements to set up and deploy the services of a community-based vigilante outfit.

This, however, is following a recent operation of the police in the community that led to the dislodging of a notorious gang of cultists terrorizing the town.

The operation left the ring leader of the nefarious group, one Chimaobi Iheme aka Saka dead while several others were wounded.

The shootout, which took place at Egbu Community Girls Secondary School, followed a tip-to the police that the gang members were harassing members of the community.

Speaking to newsmen at the palace of the traditional ruler of the community, Eze Felix Nwanna Egbukole, the President-General of the Egbu Town General Assembly, Sir Simon Nkwazema said the town with the support of the traditional ruler, had commenced the process of re-introducing village vigilante to ensure that proper protection of lives and properties of residents of the community.
