Two persons were killed yesterday during an anti-gay protest at
Temidire, Alagbado area of Lagos State. First, a 48-year-old father of
five was crushed to death while protesting against a supposed homosexual
in the community.
According to witnesses, the deceased, Mr Ganiyu
Adebayo, a bricklayer, was crushed to death by the vehicle of the
alleged gay, identified simply as Alhaji Tunji Rasak aka Alhaji Gay. The
residents were protesting against Rasak’s continued stay in the
community. They alleged that he had been ‘raping’ their young boys and
terrorising the community with his thugs.
The protesters carried placards with different inscriptions. One of
the placards reads: “Alhaji Gay must leave our community! We want
peace.” When contacted on the phone, the man at the centre of the storm,
Rasak, denied all the allegations. This was shortly before news came
that Rasak was also killed in the clash. The protest started last week
with the community members angrily storming the Lagos State Police
Command Headquarters, Ikeja, levelling allegations against Rasak.
The protest continued yesterday, but turned bloody, leading to
Adebayo’s killing allegedly by Rasak. Adebayo’s remains have been
deposited at Ifo General Hospital Mortuary, according to the Baale of
the community, Alhaji Najimu Abioye. The protests were led by Abioye.
Last week, the protesters submitted a petition to the state Commissioner
Police, Mr Fatai Owoseni. Abioye said: “After we re-ported him to the
police without any action being taken, we decided to come together.
