Navy officer kills one, injures two

A birthday party went awry after the celebrant, a naval officer, opened fire, killing one person and injuring two others at Majidun area of Ikorodu, Lagos State. 

Nobody was sure if the naval officer was drunk or not, it was only gathered that, filled with joy for witnessing his birthday, he shot into the air.
However, three tipper drivers were hit by stray bullets from the naval officer’s gun in the Monday incident. One of the drivers died in the hospital yesterday while two others were still battling to stay alive. The officer was deployed to Majidun community to halt activities of pipeline vandals.
Witnesses said that the yetto- be identified officer brought out his rifle and started shooting sporadically to celebrate his birthday. Colleagues of the dead and injured drivers were said to have been chased away from rushing the victims to the hospital by armed naval personnel.
The incident, which occurred about 3pm, saw many of the residents and traders in the area hurriedly locking up shops for fear of being beaten by the naval officials. But, yesterday the residents trooped out to protest the killing and alleged atrocities of naval personnel in the community.
