Lagos accepts 110 Togolese asylum seekers

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State has approved the acceptance of 110 Togolese seeking asylum at the Lagos office of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrant and Internally Displaced Persons (MCFRMI).

Over 11,000 of them fled their country 10 years ago following their opposition to the Togolese autocratic leadership style but only 110 of them managed to find their way to Lagos from Republic of Benin through Nigeria’s border. For several days, the displaced Togolese dominated the entire Awolowo Way in Lagos before the governor ordered their relocation.
It was gathered that aside the need to rescue the asylum seekers, Ambode ordered their proper rehabilitation and accommodation to prevent them from becoming instrument of the dreaded Boko Haram sect and to also prevent another outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) since ‘nobody knows their health history’. Among those rescued were 50 children, comprising 24 male and 26 female.
