The busy Onitsha-Owerri Road was yesterday grounded as commercial
motorcyclists and tricycle operators engaged the Anambra State Special
Task Force enforcing the government directive banning them from plying
some designated roads in the commercial city.
Governor Willie Obiano had
earlier this year banned motorcyclists popularly called Okada riders
and tricycle (Keke NAPEP) operators from plying Onitsha- Owerri Road,
Enugu-Onitsha Ex-pressway, Awka Road, Nkpor Old Road, Niger Street,
Oguta Road, New and Old market.
In a state-wide broadcast, the governor warned operators to steer
clear of the stated areas. He pointed out that anybody caught would pay a
fine of N5,000 as first offender and if caught again, would forfeit his
motorcycle or tricycle to the state government.
