Five killed as train, trailer collide in Lagos

At least five people were feared dead while scores of others were injured when a trailer collided with train at Pen-Cinema, Agege, Lagos.
Witnesses claimed that the accident occurred about 9:30pm on Monday after the train, coming from Iddo, rammed into the trailer which was on the rail line.
The two conductors and driver of the trailer reportedly died instantly while commuters, who hang on top of the train, were flung down on impact.

Some of them died as they hit the ground, while others sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the hospital. A policewoman, who wished to remain anonymous, said eight people died in the accident. According to her, the injured were rushed to the hospital.
The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Patricia Amadin, confirmed the accident. She, however, said that only two persons, who hung on top of the train, lost their lives.

The General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), Michael Akindele, also said that two persons hanging on the train lost their lives when they fell off as a result of the impact of the train on the trailer. Akindele gave the names of the deceased as Saka Nagim and Segun Adebambo. He appealed to Lagos residents to value their lives and stop hanging on trains.

The LASEMA GM said the train was coming from Ikeja end while the trailer coming from Okekoto towards Pen Cinema before the train ramped on it. A trader, Rahimot, said that commuters hanging on the trains were those mostly affected by the incident. Rahimot said that the victims were immediately rushed to All Souls Hospital, Agege for treatment. She added: “Some of them were smoking Indian hemp on top of the train.

I saw body parts such as hands and legs on the ground after the accident. It is very saddening.” Mr Segun Balogun, said: “The trailer was going towards Pen Cinema roundabout. The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) officials were supposed to lower the bar; if it was lowered on time, the trailer driver would have seen it. But it was too late! The train dragged the driver on the track. “Many people were killed while others were injured. We are not happy about this accident. I cannot really count or tell you how many lives it claimed, but at least five or six people died.
