A convicted killer has been awarded $1,251 after a jury ruled his
rights were violated when a prison guard barred him from hugging his
wife.
Kevin King, who is serving a life sentence for a 1982 murder, won his case last week in a federal court in Detroit, Michigan.
Judge Matthew Leitman awarded the 52-year-old inmate $1,250 in
punitive damages and $1 for a violation of his First Amendment rights,
reports Sky News.
The judge ordered the case go to trial last year.
He ruled that prison officer Tiffaney Williams had retaliated against
King and his wife over their previous complaints about her not allowing
them to touch.
The guard undervalued human contact, Judge Leitman said, adding that touching each other was the Kings’ “sole form of intimacy”.
