Two persons have died after two trains
collided at Pen-Cinema area of Agege in Lagos State.
The incident which occurred on Sunday came barely a week after a train and trailer collided at the same spot, leaving five persons dead and injuring others.
Witnesses said that the two victims were hanging on the rooftop of a moving train and fell when the two trains rammed into each other.
The two died, while a third passenger sustained severe injuries. The Lagos Railway District Manager, Mr Akin Osinowo, has called on the families of the deceased to go and collect their bodies at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute- Meta, Lagos, with relevant information. He said: “The two casualties were passengers who illegally hanged on the rooftop of the moving train. The injured passenger is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.” About 9:30pm on Monday last week, a train, coming from Iddo, rammed into a trailer which was on the rail line.
The two conductors and driver of the trailer died instantly while commuters, who hung on top of the train, were flung down on impact. Some of them died as they hit the ground, while others sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the hospital. A policewoman said that eight people died in the accident. Reacting to Sunday’s incident, Osinowo said the NRC Managing Director, Adeseyi Sijuwade, had instituted a panel of inquiry to find out the immediate and remote causes of the accident. He said: “Members of the panel are the Directors of Operations, Electrical, Mechanical, Signal and Intelligent Unit.
The Managing Director directed the head of various departments to visit the site and interview witnesses. “They are also to visit the police station and make inquiry. The panel is also to find out the main causes of the accident and determine the details and number of casualties.”
The families of the deceased have been advised to bring documentary evidence to support their claim; this is evidence of identity of the bodies, evidence of their relationship with the dead and a sworn affidavit. He added: “After being certified, they will be referred to the police authority where we will ensure that the bodies are released to them.”
