15 FSARS officials face trial for extortion

Fifteen operatives of the Federal Special Anti- Robbery Squad (FSARS), Abuja, are currently facing orderly room trial for various offences, ranging from disobedience to lawful order to incivility to members of the public.

A source at the office of the Commissioner of Police, in charge of FSARS in Area 3, Mr. Isaac Ekeh, disclosed that the policemen were arrested and investigation carried out on them after some members of the public made complaints against them.
Some of the complainants alleged harassment, intimidation and extortion. Ekeh ordered overhaul of that unit of the police, leading to the arrest and subsequent trial of 15 policemen. The source added: “Some operatives in recent times have not only abandoned police duty, but no longer obey their superior officers.
These policemen are either extorting money from visiting relatives of suspects, or intimidating those who have no money to offer them. The situation became so bad and worrisome that the commissioner of police had to take drastic action.” When contacted, Ekeh said the move was to sanitise the rot in that department.
