On January, 7, 2016, Makinde Adesina 29, Tanimona Dele 38, both
traders and another of their friend, Nosiru Ganiyu, left their homes in
the early hours of the morning.
Their plan was to quickly reach the
Ile-Epo Market, located along Oshodi- Abeokuta Expressway, Abule Oke-odo
area of Lagos, where they used to trade, to make early morning sales.
The traders had many plans for that day, but part of it was definitely
not to get shot, inflicted with machete cuts or to be admitted into
hospitals, battling awful pains and praying to live.
Presently, Adesina and Dele are battling to stay alive at Obitoks
Hospital, Ile-Epo, while Ganiyu was referred to the Lagos State
University Teaching Hospital Ikeja (LASUTH), where a surgery was
expected to be performed on him.
The crisis in the market is a tussle
over revenue collection which had pitched market leaders with the Agbado
Oke-Odo LCDA, with the traders insisting that the council cannot use
the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) members to collect
revenue in the market, since it wasn’t a motor park.
Trouble started
last week, after some members of the NURTW in the area, with
policemeninvaded the market with guns and other dangerous weapons and
unleashed hell.
