Boat explodes in Lagos, kills one

28-year-old man, Emmanuel Omu, has died after a commercial boat exploded on the Victoria Island area of Lagos on Friday.
His remains were recovered from the waters on Sunday morning.
Another yet-to-be-identified victim was said to be in a coma and had been admitted in a hospital in the state.
Our correspondent learnt that the incident happened when the boat was refueling at Capital One Jetty on the Lagos Island.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the boat exploded and the passengers, some of whom sustained injuries in the course of the incident, fell into the waters.
The spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency, South West Zone, Ibrahim Farinloye, told our correspondent that the passengers were rescued by local efforts as the agency was not informed on time.
He added that NEMA became involved after Omu’s relatives reported to it that the owners of the boat had yet to find him.
He said, “The boat belongs to Aquitien Oil and Gas. It took off from V-Craft Jetty, and was heading towards Lekki.
“The deceased was going to Lekki for a contract when he boarded the boat, along with other passengers whose number we have yet to ascertain.
“They had a stopover at Capital Oil Jetty to refuel when their engine exploded. The people in the boat were injured and fell into the water. But people came around and rescued them.
“A relative of Omu, Sunday Ezugha, raised the alarm that he had not been seen, leading to further search for the victim.
“The remains of the late Omu were, however, recovered on Sunday after it floated.”
When contacted on the telephone, Ezugha told PUNCH Metro he was not ready to comment on the incident.
He said, “I am sorry, I can’t talk right now about the incident. I will call you later.”
