Robbery suspect arrested after 10 years on wanted list

A suspected robber, described as notorious, has finally been nabbed by detectives attached to the State Criminal Investigations Department (SARS), Ikeja, Lagos State.

The suspect, identified as Obinna Okorie was said to have been on the police wanted list for more than 10 years.

It was gathered that aside from SARS and FSARS hunting for him, police divisions were also frantically trying to arrest him.

Okorie became one of the most wanted robbers, after several robbery suspects mentioned his name. He was also wanted in other states. Policemen got to recognize the name, but the suspect was like a spirit to them.

Okorie was alleged to be a specialist in hijacking of containers filled with goods valued at millions of naira. He was also said to be involved in organizing robbery operation with gangs he used to raise. It is believed that he used to disband the gangs after operations.

A police source said: “They used to wear military uniforms and pose as task force whenever they want to rob containers.”

Okorie was arrested with the assistance of Interpol after it was discovered that most of the snatched items in Nigeria, were taken to his warehouses in Cameroun.

Okorie, who tells people that he was actually a businessman who sells shoes, said of all the allegations leveled against him by police, “I have nothing to say. It happened as the police said.”

If Okorie was not willing to speak, the police were willing. One of the detectives close to the case said: “Okorie was selling spare parts in Ladipo market before he went into robbery. He used to receive stolen items and sponsor robbery operations. About 15 stolen containers, loaded with LG products, were traced to him.”
